But can you really find your lost dog with AirTags? Read on to find your dog by wearing an AirTag Case for your pet, and how to track your pet with AirTags!
What is an AirTag?
An AirTag is a disc, about the size of a 2p coin, but thicker. You stick it on anything you want to track, and then (in theory) you can find the object's location using the Find My app on your iPhone.
Sounds great, right? Yes, but it's important to understand how AirTags work.
How do Pet AirTags work?
AirTags rely on a lot of iPhones to work. That's because, unlike purpose-built dog location trackers like the PitPat GPS, AirTags don't have their own GPS receiver. They don't even have their own mobile phone network connection.
Instead, they rely entirely on a passing iPhone (yours or someone else's), and when the phone passes by, they quickly talk to it. The phone must be within 10 meters, and the phone's location is actually transmitted to you, telling you roughly where your AirTag is.
To put an AirTag on your pet, pair it with your phone and give it a name - or, since you're using it to track your pet, enter a custom name. Then, confirm your email and phone number to register the AirTag to your Apple ID.
To mark your pet's AirTag as lost, go to Find My > Items on your iPhone and tap the AirTag. Swipe up on the menu to reveal additional options, then select Enable under the Lost Mode heading. Tap Continue, then enter the phone number or email you want people to contact you, then tap Next. On the final page, choose whether you want to be notified when the item is found, add the message you want to appear on the finder's phone, then tap Activate to save everything.

● The Bluetooth range is estimated to be only 800 feet, which isn't big enough to find a lost dog on its own using just your phone.
● If you live in a lower populated area with spotty cell phone coverage, it's unlikely that someone else with an iPhone will pass your dog and activate the Lost Mode.
● If you don’t choose the correct AirTag case for a dog collar, your dog might be able to remove the AirTag or otherwise damage it.
● You can set up a "separation alert" to go off if your dog leaves the Bluetooth range, but this will happen a lot and the sound can scare your dog.
● AirTags can only be connected to one Apple ID, so only one family member can see and track the pets at any given time.
